Just as local sporting legend Rats Scalon is to be inducted into the Adirondack Sporting Council's Hall of Fame, a shot rings out. Then four more shots ring out, apparently to make sure the the Hall of Fame induction is posthumous. Thus begins "A Sporting Chance," the Fifth Annual Fall Mystery Drama to be presented at 7 p.m. on September 25. The play begins and ends at the Lake Placid High School Auditorium.
In this year's dessert theatre drama the characters have been assembled for a roast of the beloved Rats Scalon in a tribute to his greatness. Now dead, the audience will find Scalon was not so beloved.
As the first act proceeds, audience members watch and glean information about a murder. During the second act the audience travels around Mirror Lake -- by bus -- interviewing characters at various clue sites.
The audience participation is needed because the hapless detective team of Java and Jo are not fully capable of figuring out their own hat size, let alone a murder.
Det. Java and Det. Jo, are played by Micah Demers and Erica Retrosi, respectively. The potential suspects are: the sports promoter played by Danielle Fransçios, the rhythmic gymnast (Lyndsay Holly), the ice skating pair (Amanda Thayer and Danny Baker), the Virgin Island bobsled captain (Ryan Garso) the biathlete (Elizabeth Dietrich), the curler (Thomas Small) and the National Yo Yo Champ (Sarah Chilson).
"A Sporting Chance" is directed by Peggy Plank and was written by local George DeChant. As the title indicates, this year's production will revolve around the athletes who make the 'Olympic Village' their occasional home.
