Vermont Attached Rates

"Attached Rates" are circular townmarks that
showed integral rate marking numerals alongside, and frequently the
words FREE or PAID vertically. These patented handstamp devices saw
use in the 1830-1845 period largely from post offices in New York
State and the New England States. (data from the American Stampless
Cover Catalog--Volume 1, 1997).
According to the ASCC the following post offices
used Attached Rate cancels:
- Bellows
Falls (Windham County): established
April 1, 1801
- Bennington (Bennington County): established August 25, 1791,
renamed West Bennington July 12, 1849 and quickly renamed
Bennington Centre July 27, 1849, discontinued November 29,
1889.
- Bradford (Orange County): established 3rd Quarter 1804
- Ludlow (Windsor County): established 3rd Quarter 1809
- Newbury (Orange County): established January 1, 1795
- Passumpsic (Caledonia County): established July 6, 1825
- Thetford (Orange County): established September 25, 1807
- Woodstock (Windsor County): established September 16, 1797
