Jim's Whims

Index of JCH Webpages

Synopsis

Collected here are pages devoted to words and pictures about the natural and cultural history of my neck of the woods, the northern Adirondack Upland. From early days this region, at the top of the watersheds of the St. Regis, Deer, Salmon, Chateaugay, and Great Chazy rivers, has been known as the "Shatagee Woods". Verplanck Colvin observed the area during his Adirondack Survey late in the 19th Century; excerpts from his reports are featured here.

Some of the critters, plants, minerals and other curiosities from my backyard are described here. Glacial and post-glacial landforms make up the landscape 'round about, and I'll try to illustrate these. Current human cultural activity runs to that serving the tourism, prison, and forest product industries. There is a Dark Side.
