 GunnarOsteosarcoma

We  lost our first dog, Gunnar, to bone cancer in 2002. This was a terrible, but knowledge filled experience.

Here's what we found out.

  • Bone cancer can move rapidly, so don't linger in getting Ultra sore legs checked out by a vet. Average expectancy of 10 months seems right.
  • Most often occurs at the ends of long bones
  • Traditional vets offer limb removal (all of it) + chemotherapy
  • Hill's Science Diet Canine N/D (prescription required)
  • Rimadyl (painkillers)
  • Non traditional vets: Magnetic therapy, accupuncture, Chinese herbs
  • Accunpuncture relieved some of the swelling and discomfort
  • magnetic and Reiki combined seemed to remove some of the heat
  • ACE makes reusable ice packs to wrap around leg
  • Feed RAW meats and veggies, NO MORE COMMERCIAL FOOD

When is it TIME?

When your dog tells you so. Usually refusal to eat anything for 24 hours or more (try bacon as a true test) is a good. Dogs, like humans, enjoy things that are not heavy and COLD. Try crushed ice followed with Popsicles or other flavored ice treats. Simple rice with chicken flavored baby food and maybe some browned ground beef are good meals for sick puppies.

Try a vitamin?
