May 28, 2001  Lawn

The lawn has not been mown in a decade. It is not that it is so tall. The grasses and lawn plants here are not so tall. The tallest things I know of are ferns and then indian paint brush flower stalks. There are neither of those things in this lawn, the one we are talking about today. The shortest things are the strawberries and  an assortments of grasses, then misc things that I don't know and then dandelions. I can't imagine lawns thatI once knew that were just grass, with a few dandelions or some clover. There are no lawns like that here. In other lawns, besides the one we are talking about now, but ones that are still mine, there are rare trilium, violets, dafodils, bluberry bushes, raspberry prickers, and many others. I know the ones that I can eat best. Let's review what is in the lawn we are talking about here. Strawberries, grass, dandelions, and some misc things. None of these are very tall and they are pretty normal, but something else tells me that the lawn has not been tame for years. There are tress. Themaples are the tallest, at about a foot. I could find out how old they areand know how long it has been since it was mowed, but I am not even interestedin mowing.

I tamed a part of my lawn today. Some of you who don't know me so well or have never seen my yard might think that means I mowed. I did not mow. Iperformed a very delicate and complictaed set of operations on my lawn.

I removed the tress. They were too big to just pull up, so I had to clipeach one at the base.

I thinned out the grass and other things.

I saved the dandelions for dinner.

Then I freed up every strawberrry leaf I could find, pulled everything around it, and mulched it with pine needles.

It was a very time consuming business. The plants were so packed together I was basically pulling one blade of grass at a time. Even if there wereno strawberries right there, I couldn't grab a large handful because therewas some dandelion, a.k.a. dinner, to be separated out.

In this way I tamed my lawn, made a strawberry patch, and picked dinner.
