June 7, 2000 Meet The Fish of Uncertainty

You may recognize the Pond of Uncertainty from the Spring Garden Tour.

Today, I bought a pump, filter and fountain. Here you see the box, and the fountain running in the mostly drained pond. The new purchase gave me occassion to drain the pond and see what was down here. I put down another layer of plastic, and some white stones. I though I would make the bottom visible, but as soon as I immersed the stones in eight inches of water, they were gone forever. It was that eight inches of water that I had to net all of the fish out of. I could just see a hint of a fish, and I would swing the net, and with luck, get one.

And how many fish did I find in the bottom? It is worth noting that I have not seen more than two at once for the last two weeks, and I haven't fed them in that long. And it has been very cold. Count with me?

   UNO!
                            DOS!
  TRES!
                CUATRO!
CINCO!

That is exactly how many I put in three weeks ago or so. I have already put them back in the pond, so they are an enigma, again. By the way, they really hated this bowl. They couldn't go to the outside corner, so they really thrashed around.

Please don't tell Kurtiss what I do with his favorite cereal bowl while he is away.

This is what one of these elusive fish will look like if you visit, and sneak up carefully on the pond.
