October 12 , 2001  Running Away

I am three days away from my 31st birthday. I am two days away from hopping in my truck and running away from home. I have a tentative goal of Boulder, Co. This is my first printed journal in honor of these coming events.

In this issue is the story of my trip to Washington, DC for a peace rally two weekends ago. Also included are the New York Times Article and the Washington Post article about the same peace rally. Whatever my thoughts about the rally were, they have since been overshadowed by my thoughts about the media. This is one example of how different eyes see different things, and differentmouths report different things. This is my media literacy special edition.

The attacks of September 11th have meant something different to everyonethey have touched. And I can not imagine that someone was not touched andaffected. Unfortunately when I listen to the radio, I only hear one story.I hear that over 90% of the people in the world want war, that we all supportPresident Bush to use all weapons available for the war on terrorism. I hearthat innocent people in Afghanistan, and in neighborhoods in the US havebeen attacked everyday since then, but I don’t hear that anyone findsthis is a problem.

September 11th was a terrible tragedy. I don’t know how many timesI have read that in preface to a note from my bank, or in an advertisementthis last month. Still it is worth acknowledging. While it was a tragedyit is also an opportunity. We have the opportunity to talk about life anddeath, hate and war in ways we never have and with understanding that wehave never had before. We have a different perspective as the victimized. And maybe we can use that knowledge.

I don’t know why I am going to Boulder. I am driven in some way. By the need to get out of my house, by a need for a change of scenery. Now I have a goal and I will go. As I go, I am driven by another need. I want to learn and understand what is happening in this country. I want to hear the stories of people, and I want to share my story. To me there are millions of perspectives that need to be heard in these new discussions. Since I only hear one in the radio, I am off to hear some more on my own.

I am also preparing a survey.  I will be asking people to fill out the survey as I go. My goal is to ask questions that will prompt people to think about the last month, how things and changed, and respond honestly. My goal is to learn true stories.
