Well well, did not get accepted for now. Reasons:
* Application was not complete.
* No TOEFL and SAT or ACT test scores in before February of the year of enterance.
Good things:
* If I want to be accetted for the following fall semester,
my application needs to be in by April 1, 1998 !!!
* The quote: "Please notify me (James L. Clar) if you consider the fall 1998 semester."

I have visited SUNY Geneseo on Sunday the 29th of December 1996.
I did like the campus and the Genesee valley. I like the fact
that it is not such a big school, an enrollment of 5300 students,
because I went to a school with around 540 students (rk HAVO NDDA).
With a class size just as Geneseo at around 28 students.
I was happy to find that Geneseo is located near the bus to Rochester.
And near the Rochester Airport.
Geneseo is a college that values AFS experiences
(according to the AFS College ADVANTAGE folder).

Comparison of HAVO to American standards
HAVO=Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs
Word by word translation: Higher General Secondary Education.
From the AFS country-fact-sheet, altered to the resent changes.
Students start secondary education after eight years of elementary school. At
comprehensive schools (Scholengemeenschappen), secondary education starts
with an initial transitional or bridge-year in which students can display
and examine their own potential. This way their choice at which school-type
they will continue to study will be a well considered one. Another
possibility for choosing the type of secondary education, is by a decision
made by the parents as well as by their elementary school, who base their
advise on the results of a final national test given at all the elementary
schools in the country. These students won't have a bridge-year (the type of
school they go to is generally vocational or in some cases MAVO). The
comprehensive schools admit students of all different schooltypes.
During the first two years at MAVO, HAVO or VWO, students will have classes
in about 15 different subjects, e.g. Dutch, English, French, German,
mathematics (A and B), physics, chemistry, history, geography, economics,
commercial science, social studies, arts, computer science ,physical
education etc.
HAVO (five years)
For the final two years students choose six subjects in which they will take
a final exam (Dutch and English are compulsory). These six subjects will be
studied at a higher level. With a HAVO diploma students can enter a higher
level vocational school or in some special cases, enter university.
Note: Most people going to university first take to the last year of VWO
before entering university.
English training starts in the 7th grade. From the first year of high school
up to graduation it is compulsory. In the first years of high school English
classes are given two to four hours weekly, and in the final two or three
years four to eight hours weekly.
Dutch students have the advantage that all foreign programmes are shown on
TV in the original language and subtitled in Dutch. This gives them the
opportunity to have fun and learn at the same time. For example, about 45%
of what Dutch television has to offer, are American or English productions.
On top of that nearly all over the country students can watch American or
British television (CNN/BBC).
Schools generally encourage students to read English language newspapers and
magazines, and for their final examination all students have to read English
books (15 to 25 titles, depending on the school type).
Statement from the Informatie Beheer Group:
Senior General Secondary Education in the Netherlands ("HAVO").
I, H.A.Bakker, declare that the Dutch Senior General Secondary Education
("Hoger Algemeen Voortgezet Onderwijs - HAVO") certificate is awarded by the
"r.k. school voor h.a.v.o. Notre Dame des Ages te Ubbergen" on the
successful completion of a five-year secondary school course, prior to which
eight years are spent in primary education, including two years in an infant
class.
"HAVO" is part of the Dutch system of general secondary education and is
governed by the Secondary Education Act ("Wet op het voorgezet onderwijs -
WVO"). It falls under the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and is
funded entirely by central government.
"HAVO" aims to provide students with a good general secondary education, and
to enable to take up occupations for which an education at this level is
needed.
"HAVO" certificate holders may also be admitted to the fifth year of pre-
university education ("voorbereidend wetenschappelijk ondewrwijs - VWO"). In
addition, under section 7.24 of the Higher Education and Research Act (Wet
op het hoger onderwijs en wetenschappelijk onderzoek - WHW"), they may be
admitted directly to the first year of any course in higher professional
education.
The Dutch marking system is on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest
mark. Comparisons with the marking systems of other countries may be made on
the basis of the following table:
10 - excellent
9 - very good
8 - good
7 - very satisfactory
6 - satisfactory (pass)
5 - almost satisfactory
4 - unsatisfactory
3 - very unsatisfactory
2 - poor
1 - very poor

FSA-2 ( autobiographical essay ):
Koopmans, Simeon Frederik Pallieter
Sperwerstraat 4
6573 AM Beek-Ubbergen
State University of New York at Geneseo
Quote from what I wrote on my AFS application about two years ago.
"1.86 meter, blue eyes, dark blond hair, rather sports minded and athletic,
about 60 kilos. I love raw vegetables but dislike cooked carrots and
mushrooms. I do not like going to bars or discos. I am a thinker and a
dreamer, I can work well with my hands and I am brought up rather well-
mannered. I have a mind of my own and I am a little selfish (one has to say
something negative too). My hobbies are sports, meditation, reading, chess,
cook, landscape-photography and gardening. Further I love music, electronics
and computers. My clothes are clean and neat usually, but I find it
important they feel comfortable as well."
Big surprise for me and my girlfriend (US citizen, NYS).
She came here (in the Netherlands) for two weeks. Which meant that my whole
family needed to speak English. All of them, nor my brother (1980) nor my
mom (who had English a really long time ago), had no problem of expressing
themselves.
* Information about why I am applying to study in the US.
I really enjoyed the county in the year I have been there.
Actually, I still have not gotten enough of it (I got addicted to it).
Here in the Netherlands is not a study close enough to what I would like to
see in my study. Although the Netherlands is the best country to study for
computer related studies (Gartner Group, july 1996).
See also my table of certificates I would like to get.
* Reasons why I selected the field (Computer Science).
Since six years I have been busy in the field of ICT and have read lots of
literature about it (about ten hours a week, of which about 60 percent is in
English). Further on I have helped many people and businesses with their
PC and network problems. I want to specialize in the client/server, Olap
(data mining) and (communication)protocol field. I am also really interested
in the PR field that always comes around the corner in the ICT field.
Momentarily I am system-manager at a friend of mine (two hours a week) and
and advise three small companies on how to get their WFM and ERP
should/could be intergrated with there EDI. Oops, sorry for all the
technical terms (happens to me all the time).
* Info about my special interests, abilities and family background.
Well, I think lots of my special interests and abilities I already described
above, but a few things I should mention.
Quote from my mom: "Pallieter is serious, conscientious and precis with
an eye for detail which is helpful for me because he can do all the repairs
in our household." Also have to (gotta) mention that I am quite stubborn.
So if for some reason it does not work out this year;
I'll be back on your screen next year...
About family background, my mom and dad are devorced about 10 years ago
and both born in the Netherlands. My mom worked as a nurse for many years.
My dad is teaching at the primary level. My family is, from both sides,
since long protestant and either ministers or tailors or teachers.
I have a sister; Meiemeike, who is from 1980 and a brother; Lievijn, who is
from 1984. We live in a little village, about 8,000, close to a big
university city, about 160,000, called Nijmegen and we are about 5 minutes
away from the German border.
* Plans for future study and / or employment.
I plan on either continue my study (Phd and MBA), start my own company or
work for a company in my specific field. Further on I do not really know what
I am going to do, except building my own house and become a TM teacher.
And becoming rich probably ;-)

*** Why I want to go to Geneseo.
Geneseo, first of all, is a College I feel at home and comfortable in/with.
I visited Geneseo and have seen the village. Second, Geneseo can offer me
the study I am looking for. While the Universities I have been accepted to
here in the Netherlands (all thirteen) do not offer me where I am looking
for. I am seeking a place where I feel at home and can do lots of extra
curriculum and have a broad selection of courses and possibilities to go
beyond my field. Thereby I think that Geneseo can guide and help me more
towards the direction I would like to go, which is (as of now) setting up my
own business in web-consultation, site-management and system-manager.
Big advantage of studying in the US is that I have been in NYS for a year
and control the language perfectly, I would prefer setting up my business in
the US, the school system fits me better then we have here and saves me a
lot of flying to and fro my girlfriend (who is going to study Holistic
Medicine at Long Island University, NY). Also a good reason is that I think,
based on the feeling I have at the Collage and all I read, that I have all
the opportunity to practice my meditation (Transcendental Meditation).
An other thing I think I have more opportunity doing is giving (public)
lectures and teach T'ai Chi Ch'uan Ki Akido (a selfdefence technique which
includes many things from eg karate, judo, yoga, TM, T'ai Chi and Zen).

Koopmans, Simeon F.P.
Sperwerstraat 4, 6573 AM Beek-Ubbergen, the Netherlands
State University of New York at Geneseo
Autobiographical essay.
I was born on the 28th of june 1978 in Groningen, the Netherlands.
Soon I found out that 'I' was 'me' and my mother was a nurse,
a real fighter. My dad was, and is, a teacher at a primary school.
When I got one year old we moved to where we live now. A little
village 8,000 people, about five minutes away from the German border
and close to a big university city with 160,000 people called Nijmegen.
When I was about two and a half I started my long school career.
In the mean time my father and mother had two other children who became
my sister (Meiemeike, 1980) and brother (Lievijn, 1984).
Four years later, when I was seven, my parents divorce: my mom wanted
to grow and my father rather stayed with the known.
During the years to come I grew up:
1.86 meters (6'3"), blue eyes, dark blond hair, rather sports minded
and athletic, about 60 kilo's. Loving raw vegetables but disliking
cooked carrots and mushrooms. Not liking to go to bars and disco's.
Became a thinker and a dreamer, able to work well with my hands and
brought up rather well mannered. Having a mind of my own and a little
selfish (one has to say something negative too). With hobbies like
sports (like T'ai Chi Ch'uan Ki Akido, judo, yoga, running and karate),
meditation, reading, chess, cooking, landscape-photographing and gardening.
Further more I love music, electronics and computers. My clothes are clean
and neat, usually, but I find it as important they feel comfortable.
~ Quote from what I wrote on my AFS application about two years ago.
Then I decided to go to the US for a school year. Reason why I wanted
to go on an exchange program was that I wanted to completely master
the language used in computer-land, get the greatest intercultural
experience possible (while going to school) and because I had always
been extremely shy and wanted to grow, to become my real self.
After a good investigation I choose AFS, had the best year ever
and learned to much to mention here. I also found out who my
future-parents-in-law are ! They both are Transcendental Meditation
teachers -and since I had been really into T'ai Chi Ch'uan Ki Akido,
judo and really interested in the higher meanings in/of life- I started
in meditation too.
When I came back to the Netherlands, I had a good time seeing my
family back. But had great trouble with my Dutch and every ones
and a while when English comes up again, my brother yells at me and my
mother tells me I forgot my own language.
In the year after I came back from the US I went on to do the last
two years of the highest possible secondary education in one year. While
really buzzy with school I always found time for my hobbies and family.
And in the school holidays I came back to the US to visit my host family
and my girlfriend.
Now I am looking forward to spending four years at Geneseo Collage,
working towards my own company and building my own house (which is a dream
going to become reality).
Live life, live love, PK.

*** Why Geneseo could/should accept me.
I am an international student who has perfect control over the English
language, is familiar with NNY (weather) and has a high standard of
education (HAVO is slightly above high school level and I also did 12th
grade high school). I fit in the description of the students Geneseo is
aiming for and following the Geneseo Mission Statement I am very suitable
for Geneseo.
Sorry to bother you with the following statements and poems,
but since most of them are the way I live and are from my own hand
I thought I put them in (even buzzy people have time for the blissful things
in life). It also give a little inside in me and how I think and feel.
