| This house sits on an old railroad bed, overlooking a bend in the Grasse
River, in northern New York. It was designed to be reminiscent of an Adirondack
camp, but with cleaner lines, and no birch bark. A large porch wraps two
sides of the house overlooking the river, and the interior has a largely open
plan with a double-height living room to the south. Wood finishes predominate,
on exterior and interior, but are relieved by the use of stone countertops,
tile floors, and some plaster walls. Working on the interactions of materials
as both construction and aesthetic problems while building was quite a design
education. Also invaluable was the opportunity to work alongside the client
for both the design and construction of the house.
