I will assume you are here to learn how I ( Pat ) might qualify as a teacher of Social Studies. So, though I'd much rather talk about my family, I will try to explain how I came to start WhatsoeverThings.org. I have always been interested in different cultures and religions. Even before I came to know Jesus Christ in 1979 I wanted to know more about this thing called "religion." When I read about the Greek gods, Hinduism, and New Age stuff it all seemed so weird. I never considered myself a very spiritual or mystical type, but when the Gospel was presented to me by a fellow classmate in college, coupled with his own testimony and obvious joy, I said " Now this makes sense!" I repeated a prayer and thought I was in the right club! Later, I began to question my conversion as I had no real sense of sin inside me, but agreed that I was part of mankind and therefore...you know the story. I wasn't down and out, feeling empty or any of the typical emotions that lead to great testimonies. (Conviction and sanctification came later and will never stop till I cross over Jordon! ) But looking back I believe my reason for "accepting" Christ was valid. I have learned very late in my Christian life that joy is a FINE motivator. Jesus endured the cross for the JOY that was set before Him. Maybe my idea of what joy would look like was immature but hey-- Jesus has made my joy full. I am now what John Piper calls a Christian Hedonist. C. S. Lewis would agree that the pleasures we seek are so inferior to what God has for us. As I have learned to desire God, He has shared His heart with me and at times it almost breaks mine. Being a Christian has meant higher heights but deeper seas and by that I mean that I have sorrowed over the suffering in the world but also have greater hope and joy as I keep turning to Him. I
have a degree in Anthropology with a minor on International
Studies. I have been Missions Deaconess in my church for about 5
years. I have homeschooled since 1987. I intended to go on
and get a masters in teaching Social Studies but then God brought me
Ed. ( and soon, 2 more kids! ) I really felt that I could do
something to help our family financially. Whatsoeverthings was
started as a used curricula garage sale, but I soon realized that I am
not excited about just making some money. I have to share the
great things God is doing around the world to reach every
nation. I decided to start collecting great resources and
tools to help
parents plan a course tailor made for their
students that would get them interested in far away places and
peoples. Consequently, Valid and Relevant Social Studies will be
my magnum
opus. Available in summer 2004. I hope you will take a look
at it. I, like all of you, have faced many challenges during our
home schooling years. Among them, a divorce I did not want that left me
as a single mom with four little ones under eight years old, my
youngest son Charles fought and |
