| My thesis site is located in the North Country, on a piece of family land outside Russell, NY. The main physical features of the site are trees, boulders, a beaver pond, a creek and a clearing. There is no electricity, running water or car access. Every rock and tree on site was carefully located, for they were what shaped the space and defined paths and
movement, of energy and people. The meditation upon the appropriate placement of the building on the site, in terms of energy flow, both physical and spiritual, was aided by my site drawings and model.
The program for this site is a meditation/retreat space, consisting of one large and several smaller spaces for meditation, and enclosed garden and a central hearth. The building was designed with the intention of later construction, as part of a design/build process, that will probably include a re-design phase. The project was presented as color drawings/paintings and three detailed models, of the property, the site and the building. The 3/8" scale model of the building became the central focus of my architectural investigation; where I explored issues of material and construction as well as the interlocking of spaces. | ||
