Pianos like any stringed instrument made of wood, metal & felt, are susceptible to moisture, dryness and use. In the summer, excess humidity tends to expand the sound board making the piano sharp in pitch.

Hammers, keys and other working parts become sluggish to the touch. In the winter months the opposite occurs. Excess dryness due to central heating shrinks the soundboard causing the piano to drop in pitch, Often extra sounds like buzzes and clicks occur. Like all stringed instruments, pianos will go out of tune depending on the type of use it gets.

Most people desire to have their pianos tuned once yearly. Music teachers often have their pianos tuned twice yearly.  Professionals may have their pianos tuned weekly because it is played on so heavily.
