February  18, 2000  Bewildering Snow

It is snowing today. It is snowing like that day you were here in April. It is an unexpected snow. Not that I shouldn't have expected it, really.Just that it wasn't forecast, and somewhere inside of me, I was thinkingit was Spring. I had no reason to think it was Spring, but there were a coupleof warm days, and the snow piles are higher in my drive than all last year.I am ready for Spring. It is snowing today like that day in April when youwere here. The snow was persistent and fluffy. I made you take my picture,to document something, but all you could see was a lot of white. The snowtoday is unexpected.

In the movie I wonder why they would wear scarves without hats. When would it ever be cold enough for a scarf and not for a hat?  Your ears would get cold long before your neck, and the scarves weren't even wrapped around once.

I am such a scarf expert this year because I don't have a beard. In pastwinters I didn't need scarves but this year I am clean shaven, more or less.

I surprise myself in the mirror. Well not that I am in the mirror. I expect that, but I am surprised how I look. "Who is this guy?, looking all old and cute and distinguished with that scarf? And WHAT a GOOD hair day."

Surprise!

After the movie, the daylight surprises me, like it always does when youcome out of a matinee. It is that funny daylight on a snowy day. I had triedto prepare myself for the day, but I figured it would be gray. Somehow itis just SO light.

It the Beetle it is snowing again. Like April. Snow swirls all around meand I imagine I am part of it. The King Singers are on Saint Paul Sunday.  I begin to hear the snow flakes as the voices in this madrigal group. The small clear tenors swirl close around me, darting around the car. The base line is provided by all that snow that makes the world an unbroken white. It is infinite, both the snow and the music. They are one.

With a fever and a bad cough, I have little desire to shovel snow. But once I am shoveling, I love it.
